As part of the Climate Change Media Partnership (CCMP) program, once again led this year by Internews’ Earth Journalism Network (EJN) in partnership with the Stanley Center for Peace and Security, 20 CCMP Fellows and six trainers are attending the 27th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP27) in Sharm-el-Sheikh, Egypt, from November 6-18, 2022.

Hosted by the government of Egypt, COP27 has been described as the African COP. Discussions are expected to focus on the urgent actions needed to address the mounting impacts of climate change—especially on frontline communities in Africa and vulnerable countries around the world, which have contributed the least to the global climate crisis but are shouldering a crushing burden of climate impacts.

Since launching in 2007, the CCMP has supported more than 400 journalists to report on location from the annual UN climate summit. The fellowship aims to improve public awareness and engagement on the climate crisis in low- and middle-income countries, providing the public with the information it needs to hold governments to account.

This year’s fellows, who will be the 15th fellowship cohort of the CCMP, will participate in orientation activities, daily briefings and interviews with high-level officials to produce quality reporting on climate negotiations –and their outcomes – with support from their media trainers.

The cohort will include three of EJN’s former UNCCD virtual fellows, who remotely covered the UN Convention to Combat Desertification COP15 which took place in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, in May 2022. Funded by the Robert Bosch Stiftung, the opportunity for these fellows to cover both conferences will allow them to fully explore the land use and climate nexus and cover the different angles and issue areas shared between them.

In another first for this year, with support from the Commonwealth Foundation, five virtual fellows from vulnerable Small Island Developing States and Bangladesh have also been selected to cover the conference remotely, with guidance from EJN trainers on the ground at the COP.

The 2022 CCMP program is co-organized by Internews’ EJN and the Stanley Center. Financial support for EJN has been provided by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency, the Marisla Foundation, the Robert Bosch Stiftung, the Commonwealth Foundation and the Flora Family Foundation.
